Sigurdson gets two back

Bob made a draw that held on for shot as they fought back for a deuce, making it 3-2 Beavis after two. He's playing it wide open in the third into third's rocks.

Harvey is up 2-1 after two, McEwen came back with a single to make it 2-1 Winfield. Galbraith is in a good position to get two back playing his last stone in two. His in-off attempt fell back and he only scored one.

Stonewall Interlake Pharmacy Classic 2:30 p.m. Saturday draw

We're back from lunch, and we're well into the second end of the draw.

Our feature game is on sheet 1, Bob Sigurdson vs. Ian Beavis. Beavis played a couple of nice touch shots in the first end to take three, after Sigurdson crashed on a guard with his last draw attempt of the end. I'll also keep an eye on the Muntain vs. Galbraith game.

Sheet 2:
Janet Harvey 0
Darcy Robertson 1

Sheet 3:
Jim Winfield 2
Mike McEwen

Sheet 4:
Richard Muntain 3
Chris Galbraith 0

Sheet 5:
Karen Porritt 3
Linda Stewart 0 after two ends (they're playing quickly)

Latest updates from the top, please refresh often:

Riach made a really nice thin hit and stick for the win... time for lunch.
***
Kyle just drew top four with his last rock, so Riach needs to have a look with his last stone. Go for the tie or the win?
***
Jen still gets a lot of attention coming off of the ice... several young girls came over with autograph books for signing, which she graciously accepted. We need more of that in curling to generate interest in the budding juniors.
***
Jones closed it out with steal in 10.
***
Werenich took one in nine to go up 6-5 coming home without hammer. Jones is looking good playing 10... Brown could have trouble getting her deuce.
***
Jones rebounded with (you guessed it) a two to make it 9-7 playing 10. Hmmm... gotta be an extra end coming if we're to believe precedent.
***
It's 5-5 in nine between Riach and Werenich.
***
Jones and Brown are tied 7-7 playing nine. (Yes, another two scored.) Werenich's up 5-4 playing eight.
***
Burtnyk wins after a nice touch bump... 8-3 final in eight.
***
Woody had T-line weight, but he may not be shot. Kerry can bump out for the win.
***
Burtnyk just drew edge button around cover... great touch. Woodward's only hope is to draw button.
***
Woody just crashed on a guard trying to draw around cover.
***
Woodward's in tough playing eight... Burtnyk's lined them up well behind cover. Dave Kraichy just threw a nice draw to the back of the four behind cover, but Kammerlock quietly bumped it out to sit four.
***
This time they're shaking and they really mean it... Carruthers wins in seven ends, 7-2.
***
Sean just suffered a really nasty pick on a freeze attempt... looked like a piece of gravel grabbed it.
***
The first final of the draw... Spencer wins 9-3.
***
It's a twofer festival in the Jones vs. Brown game, with Jones now up 7-5 playing eight. Werenich and Riach are tied 4-4 playing seven. Shepell is still battling Spencer, down 9-3 playing seven. Burtnyk's keeping it clean playing seven.
***
After Carruthers took one in six to go up 7-2, PattyMac and Dave Johnson started the handshakes... However, Sean wasn't ready to pull the pin, so they continued play after some discussion. Forgot the score after the Woodward update... it's 5-3 Burtnyk playing seven.
***
Richard Daneault just made a beauty pick-out up-weight takeout skinning a guard.
***
The Doctor's sporting the classic white headband today, for those keeping score at home.
***
Woody now has a free draw for two after Burtnyk's tricky double attempt over-curled. He looks good... and he's got it.
***
Barb Spencer is shooting lights out... not really giving Shepell a chance to get back into the game. Woody just made a nice bump and roll to the back of the button behind cover, giving Kerry another long look at the lay of the land.
***
Despite the lopsided score, Woodward has played well against Burtnyk. He's placed his rocks in good positions, leaving Kerry with long looks in the last three ends.
***
It's 4-2 Werenich after five.
***
At any given time in Manitoba, there's a Kirkness family member curling... kind of like at any given time there's a Simpsons episode on TV. One of the legendary curling families out there right now.
***
Grassie took a single in the fifth to get back into the game. Spencer all but ended her game by stealing four in the fifth. Jones took two to go up 5-3.
***
Burtnyk is brining workmanlike precision to his game today. Tight strategy, smooth shooting... easy to see why he's had success so far. He just stole another single as Woody rolled out on a last-rock hit. To show what a good sport he is, Woody just held the broom for The Doctor's first rock of the end as Kerry took a break.
***
In other games... Jones and Brown are tied at three after four, Spencer's stolen three consecutive times to go up 5-2, and Riach/Wrench haven't posted the score yet, so I can't update that one just yet.

Carruthers is firing on all cylinders today... making all of the nice bump and rolls behind cover. All of the extra practice is clearly paying off. They just stole two to go up 6-1.
***
Woody tried a runback and just missed... Burtnyk didn't throw his last stone and took two.

Burtnyk made a touchy bump guard to make the raise tougher.
***
Burtnyk's facing an interesting situation with his first stone of the fourth with hammer. He has two on the back of the four foot, and Woody has two on top of the four with plenty of junk in front.
***

A full slate of top teams on the ice right now, in women's and men's play.

I'm focusing on sheets 4 and 5 - Sean Grassie vs. Reid Carruthers and Murray Woodward vs. Kerry Burtnyk. Also playing are Doug Riach vs. Kyle Werenich on sheet 1, Jennifer Jones vs. Joelle Brown on sheet 2 and Barb Spencer vs. Connie Shepell on sheet 3.

This is my first time at this event in many years, and I'm remember why I rate it as one of the top events on the tour. The ice usually quick and consistent, the draw is fair and balanced, and the town rallies around the event.

Now, add free wi-fi access, LCD monitors updstairs focused on the away houses, and you have a first class operation.

Back to the action... after three ends:

Carruthers just popped a three in the third end to take a 4-1 lead over Grassie. Sean wrecked on a guard on a tight takeout attempt. Burtnyk leads 3-1 over Woodward. Shepell leads Spencer 4-2, Jones leads Brown 3-1 and Werenich leads Riach 2-1.

Trying to salvage competitive season

With less than two months to go before the City Zones and MCA Bonspiel are upon us, we find ourselves seeking a chance to compete.

As you likely know by now, Dan left to play third for Richard Muntain a while back. While we managed to lure Derek Campbell out of competitive "retirement" to skip our squad in the Asham Major League, we found he is not available for the Zones.

So, we turn to the free agent market to see if there are any Talented Mr. Skips out there waiting for a team to enter the key events in January.

Failing that, we are available individually as spares for teams needing a player to make a run.

Speaking for myself... I'll play any position, and I practice five times per week.

Feel free to send us an email and we'll get back to you quickly.

Cheers!

Major changes completed

Long-time surfers of our blog will have noticed that I've migrated all of the main content from the regular website over to this space on Blogger.

It's much easier to update the blog from anywhere, and I've added permanent HTML content on this main page to include our complete schedule and results for the year.

In short, I will only update the regular webpage on occasion, whereas this blog will be updated constantly.

I will also be taking a more broad approach to updates on the site, commenting on Manitoba curling news in general, and hopefully igniting a compelling discussion through the comment function.

Thanks again for drumming up the hits on the regular site. Please make sure to bookmark this blog or add it to your list of favourites, and sign up for the RSS feed, as we head into the meat and potatoes of the competitive season.

Sponsorship opportunities

In order to excel as competitors in the Manitoba Curling Tour, we need a team of sponsor partners working with us to ensure that we can focus on team development and compete to our full potential.

In tune with the ultimate goal of representing Canada at the Olympic Games in Vancouver-Whistler in 2010, we have established Gold, Silver and Bronze level sponsorship packages that represent three ways to partner with us going forward.

We have firmly established our goals - both long and short term - and the groundwork and game plan to achieve them.

Along with the opportunity for exposure to the key demographic of people who follow competitive curling in Manitoba, you have the opportunity to become associated with a team striving for success with a professional and motivated work ethic.

Goals

Short term

  • Qualify for the Safeway Select and make it to the Final Eight in 2006-2007

Long-Term

  • Become a force within the competitive curling world and challenge at the major Slam and Canada Curling Association events

  • Win Olympic Gold in 2010 (Vancouver)

Groundwork

We will be working with MCA High Performance Director Connie Laliberte-Salina with an early-season delivery analysis, followed by twice-weekly team practice sessions. We will also be throwing practice rocks four days per week to develop consistency.

Game Plan

We are analyzing entries into select Manitoba Curling Tour Canada Team Ranking Point qualifying events throughout the season. We will also be competing in the Safeway Select qualifying events leading up to the provincial championships in February.

We are tentatively scheduled to compete in the following events:

  • Five Manitoba Curling Tour events (dates and events to be confirmed)

Sponsorship Details

Beyond the usual company logos sewn onto team jackets, we are offering an enhanced package of exposure and service for our sponsors to maximize value.

Media exposure will depend on our success in competitive events. If we qualify for the finals in major competitions, we may receive coverage from TV, radio and print news media. Obviously, the more sponsorship funding we have, the more we can concentrate on training and competing.

All sponsors will receive:

  • Graphic ad and link to company website from TeamMcFadyen.ca main page

  • Recurring mentions on our curling blog

  • Mention in media coverage, where possible

Gold Medal Sponsor Enhancements

  • Full-size company logo on prime location of team jacket (back panel)

  • Free on-ice curling seminar hosted by Team McFadyen for your organization (plus cost of ice rental)

  • Guest speaker availability for exposure at your company's functions

  • Main page full-size graphic banner ad with link to your company's website

-- $5,000 commitment

Silver Medal Sponsor Enhancement

  • Company logo on team jacket chest

-- $2,500 commitment

Bronze Medal Sponsor Enhancement

  • Company logo on team jacket arm

-- $1,000 commitment

Unlikely scenario: Part 1

There I was, heading to the East St. Paul Curling Club Wednesday night, thinking about my debut as a skip in Manitoba Curling Tour play.

We were getting ready to face one of the best teams in the province in Peter Nicholls/Dean Dunstone, with two new players and little recent practice time.

I was a wee nervous... managed to take my warm up slides with no incident, despite that fact that I was dreading the first throw of the game. (I fought a migraine the previous night with little success, and twin Tylenol 3s only took the edge off.)

But, we actually fared pretty well... if we didn't have a brain cramp in the third end and give up four, we would have been right in the thick of things.

I actually enjoyed throwing last brick in tight situations - all of that practice brought up the confidence level. I was able to sit in the hack and focus solely on execution.

We move to the B-side of the draw, and play a ridiculous daytime game tomorrow... not sure who drew up the grid but that's nuts... a non-berth game with a weekday morning draw? Heard lots of grumbling in the locker room.

Still, I'm very much looking forward to hitting the ice again tomorrow, as we try to rebound against either Hamblin or Ewasko, depending on who lost Wednesday night. They're both very strong teams so either way will be a fight.

QUICK BITES: Weird site Part 1: At practice on Tuesday at the Granite, I look over to see some guy in snazzy chords, Hush PuppiesTM, a natty vest and sweater, and a throwing stick, heaving rocks on a sheet. That, alone, was kind of off, but the fact that, on either side of him, were Jeff Stoughton and Kerry Burtnyk... and you have a beauty "one of these things is not like the others" dealio... Guys I'd like to see do well: Bob Sigurdson (practices a lot and loves the game), Travis Bale (practices more than Bob), Don Spriggs (great comeback story considering last year's tragedy). Guys who have worn out their 15 minutes? You won't get that list unless you buy me a beer in the bar... Weird site part 2: Manitoba legend Ray Turnbull putting Stroughton and Co. through the paces at practice today. It's unusual to see one of the best throwers ever getting words of wisdom. But, everyone needs to tweak, just look at Tiger... I'm learning much about how weather affects ice conditions as we move from high humidity to cold and dry conditions... Jim Bender had a nice update on the sad story surrounding Heather Mowat's battle. Everyone should say a prayer for her, and follow a friends directions by emailing a goofy photo to cheer her up when she awakens.

Cheers, all, and thanks for reading. See you on the ice!
